Workers preparing to answer interview questions may well want to point out their expertise in social media for certain roles, however many employees are being reprimanded for misuse on such sites.
According to legal firm DLA Piper, a third of firms have disciplined staff for misusing company information online. Three out five of firms asked in the survey encouraged the use of sites such as Facebook and LinkedIn at work but comments about workmates landed employees in trouble at one in five such firms.
Alan Chalmers, head of a DLA Piper employment practice told the Sheffield Star: “The use of social media is undoubtedly an ongoing challenge for employers.
“Whilst it provides businesses with a number of new platforms from which to interact with customers, it also presents significant risks if not handled properly internally."
The problems may have come from a lack of a social media policy, the survey found only one in four companies surveyed had a stand-alone policy.
