People looking for jobs during a downturn need to show their creative side if they are to stand out from the crowd.
This jobs advice was offered by Mark Batey, joint chair of the Psychometrics at Work Research Group at Manchester Business School.
Speaking at the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development's (CIPD) HRD conference, Mr Batey was reported by People Management as saying it is not only in a candidate's interest to be creative - businesses who appoint creative staff will see a number of benefits as well.
He said creative teams are "more efficient, better at problem solving, don't waste time, and often give better service".
Mr Batey claimed that while it was possible to train people to think creatively, it helped businesses massively if they could just weed out uncreative candidates during the recruitment process.
He also recommended supporting creative individuals within an organisation to ensure they achieve their potential.
Recently, CIPD urged businesses to consider increasing pay for staff that perform particularly well - even if budgets are currently constrained.
