Cornwall 's capital and only city, Truro is no sprawling metropolis. Compact, aesthetically pleasing to the eye and full of character entirely unique to this part of the world, the city has been a fashionable place to live for the last two hundred years.
Being 9 miles from the coast has meant that Truro has escaped being sucked into a position whereby the tourism sector dominates the local economy where the streets are lined with usual array of gift and souvenir shops. Indeed, this is an all-year round city that whose popularity is increasing as more and more people opt out of the hustle and bustle of modern city living.
Getting around Truro
With over 23,000 people working in Truro - more than twice the number of economically active people living in the city – commuting into the city centre during the morning rush-hour can be testing at times. But once you get there, Truro benefits from a large multi-storey car park along worth a handful of smaller short- and long-term options.
In terms of public transport, Truro rail station is a few minutes' walk from the main centre and is on the Cornish Main Line with direct services to and from St Austell, Perranwell and Redruth as well as being connected on the main line between London Paddington and Penzance . Whereas the bus station is well-connected to the surrounding area.
Eating, drinking and shopping in Truro
Cornwall is unquestionably one of the most popular visitor destinations and also one of the most desirable places to live, offering the perfect mix of fantastic beaches, quaint villages and a quality of life that most of us envy. But if you think that Cornwall 's shopping experience is limited to a handful of bucket-and-spade shops, surf stores and a few quirky types of retailers, then you clearly haven't been to Truro .
Whilst not in the same league – and nor does it pretend to be – as Exeter or Bristol , Truro is by far the best place for shopping in Cornwall . Along with a good choice of familiar names such as Marks & Spencer, River Island, Waterstones and WHSmiths, the city has a number of independent, Truro-only shops including Oh Knickers!, a very unique lingerie boutique. And there are two distinctive covered markets, Lemon Quay and the Creation Centre - an arcade of specialist shops beneath the same roof as the pannier Market.
Truro 's restaurants are also centrally located and despite the city's size, there are a number of eating establishments to satisfy even the most demanding of gastronomes. It is also worth taking a wander down some of the side streets which can reveal some hidden culinary gems, with some of the city's finest options a little off the beaten track. And it's the same when it comes to going out for a drink or two after work or at the weekend, with a plethora of pubs along with an increasing number of modern, fashionable bars dotted around the centre.
The performing arts are a prominent feature of Truro 's cultural scene. Along with the Hall for Cornwall which has quickly gained a reputation for its theatrical performances, the city's streets, parks and gardens are full of the sound of talented buskers and street entertainers.
Alternatively, the Royal Cornwall Museum is worth a visit if you are keen to learn about Cornwall 's' Celtic past along with the faux-pas Gothic-style cathedral which was completed in 1910.
Elsewhere, one of the county's most celebrated landmarks, the Eden project, is just 20 miles away. And the Lost Gardens of Heligan at Pentewan offer a more traditional horticultural experience than the futuristic phenomenon on offer at Eden .
Set on three rivers and a few short miles from the coast, a wide range of water sports are catered for. As are golf, cricket, tennis, football along with a leisure centre and a half a dozen private health clubs.
