Amid the attractive Victorian factories and warehouses - that formed the city's manufacturing engine-room, churning out Raleigh bikes, the Boots pharmacy empire and cigarettes – and the oft grotesque architectural eyesores of today such as the such as the spaceship-like National Ice Centre, Nottingham is an eclectic mix of medieval and modern.
Linked forever to Robin Hood and transformed by the riches of the nineteenth century, modern Nottingham is a busy and energetic city that attracts shoppers by the coach-load, professionals and – due to the relatively lower cost of living – property investors.
Getting around Nottingham
Getting to and from the centre is easy enough, particularly if you are using public transport. Nottingham rail station is served by rail services operated by East Midlands Mainline, Cross Country and local services via East Midlands Connect and is on the southern side of the centre and a short ten-minute walk from the Market Square .
Indeed, the re-opening of the Robin Hood Line to passengers linked Nottingham with its close neighbours Hucknall, Mansfield, Kirkby-in-Ashfield and Sutton-in-Ashfield. Other lines connect the city to Beeston, Burton Joyce, Netherfield and Carlton .
As for buses, Victoria station and Broad Marsh bus station with all local routes served predominantly by Nottingham City Transport, and Trent Barton. And with Nottingham 's thriving nightlife, late night bus services operate out of the city.
Entering the city via car is an experience much like any other city – sluggish at the best of times. With a severe lack of adequate parking facilities, the council opened a new tram network in 2004 and also operate 7 Park & Ride schemes around the city, providing space for around 4,000 cars.
Eating, drinking and shopping in Nottingham
During the 1980s Nottingham barely got a mention in the Good Food guide but, today the city certainly has its fair share with a number of restaurants reflecting the ethnic diversity of the city – primarily Italian and Asian. Although missing an instantly identifiable restaurant quarter per se, the area close to the Victorian Shopping Centre has a number of restaurants in addition to a good choice of café bars and other eateries along the canalside.
But the city really comes to life at night. Nottingham 's clubs and bars are some of the liveliest in the country. Pubs in Market Street are predominantly for locals but, move further around the city and there is a wealth of bars to choose from.
At the heart of the city centre is Market Square, an open plaza that is dominated by a large water feature and numerous complementary water fountains in what is the biggest city-centre square in England, and overlooked by the neo-Baroque domed Council House which leads to Exchange Square where a number of boutique and high class shops can be found.
Elsewhere, the Hockley quarter adjacent to the Lace Market has a high concentration of fashionable independent stores and designers hoping to emulate local-boy Paul Smith. But for more familiar high street shops, the Broadmarsh Shopping Centre is home to the likes of BHS, H&M and, of course, Boots as well as a number of out-of-town retail parks.
And with a student population in excess of 60,000, it comes as no surprise that Nottingham has a thriving leisure scene with the development of the Cornerhouse complex in Trinity Square , renovation of the Castle Wharf region, and expansion of the Lace Market and Hockley areas, for example.
However, if you are looking to escape for a few hours from the office for some much-needed respite, the Museum of Nottingham Lace , the Castle and the University of Nottingham 's outstanding Lakeside Art Centre, are all worth a visit.
Trent Bridge is a major draw for cricket fans, and Nottingham Forest football club has an impressive heritage that belies their current form, whilst Notts Forest can claim to be the oldest professional football team in the world. Speedway , tennis, ice hockey and Rugby Union are also synonymous with the city. And for those who prefer to participate rather than spectate, there's the National Ice Centre, National Water Sports Centre
Main residential areas
While there is an identified oversupply of smaller apartments in the city centre, traditional housing stock is performing well. Nottingham is a cheaper location to buy a house and with a substantial redevelopment programme taking place in the city, a number of modern apartments are becoming available offering high standards yet lower living costs than many other cities in the UK .
