With a population of over 1 million people and a workforce of some 300,000, North London is a key cog in the capital's economic wheel and one that has been primed for urban regeneration, primarily so as to halt the gap that is growing between a population that is projected to grow three times faster than jobs in the sub-regional economy.
Indeed, the London Plan has ambitions to increase the capital's population by 800,000 before 2016. And it is anticipated that North London's population will rise by as much as 160,000 between now and 2016 – the equivalent to adding a city as big as Oxford.
Then and now
According to the Mayoral Office, North London is classified as the Borough's of Barnet, Enfield , Waltham Forest and Haringey. T he national decline of the manufacturing industries over the last twenty years had significantly affected the North London region which has, historically, been a major centre for the capital's economy. With the closure of a number of leading employers since the 1980s and 1990s and the subsequent loss of jobs, the North London sub-region sought-out new economic drivers in a new post-industrial age.
And today, the manufacturing sector's pre-eminence as the mainstay of the local economy has been reduced and it dramatic reversal of fortune now sees it account for less than 6-8 per cent of local jobs – its position lost to the newly evolving service industries.
Indeed, the biggest contributor to the local North London economy - in employment terms – is the public sector.
The public sector is over-represented in North London for jobs and employs some 40 per cent of a total workforce of 300,000 people across all sectors. Which means that more than 120,000 people make their living in the fields of public administration, health and education with the likes of Hackney and Camden Council's being two of the biggest employers in the district, employing around 17,000 people between them.
With London being the financial centre for the UK and one of the leading financial cities in the world it inevitably follows that the finance sector plays an important role in terms of employment provision in addition to its contribution to the local GDP of North London. And its significance is experienced throughout district to the extent that this sector is the second biggest employer accounting for 29 per cent of all jobs in the fields of banking, insurance and financial services.
And following the finance sector is the retail sector. North London boasts a number of successful town centres which are major shopping areas in their own right, including Edgeware, Enfield Town , Walthamstow and Wood Green. Along with the growing restaurant, bar and hotel trade in the district, this sector is responsible for around 1 in 4 (23 per cent) of all jobs.
Of increasing significance is the creative sector. With around 3,000 businesses working within the arts and creative industries, this sector is one of the fastest growing in North London and employs in the region of 12,000 people
An interesting observation is that variations in employment exist across the region. For instance, Barnet has been growing at an average rate of 13 per cent in employment terms followed by Enfield at 4 per cent. W hilst Waltham Forest is seeing a downward trend of around 2-3%.
