Jobs in Chichester | Pictures of Chichester
The cathedral city of Chichester is located in West Sussex on the south coast. As the landing point for the Roman invasion and eventual conquest of Britain in AD43 – whose street plan is still evident in the town today – Chichester’s regional influence has continued throughout its history with the city being a local government stronghold in recent times.
With a population of around 110,000, this former Roman city has been preserved from the ravages of modern development that has transformed the aesthetics of so many cities across the UK, and has capitalised on its natural graces, stunning architecture and impressive regional surroundings that have encouraged a booming retail and tourism industry that sustains the economy.
Then and now
Chichester economy is primarily based on service industries with more than 90% of all employment opportunities being found within a range of sectors, the most significant of which being the public sector.
As the administrative centre of West Sussex, the fields of public administration, health and education employ more people than any other, with more than 34% of the workforce earning their living in one of these three areas..
Being within striking distance of some of the most fascinating Roman ruins in the country, in addition to being home to the 900-year old Chichester Cathedral, tourism is one of the major drivers for the local economy. And when the tourists come they tend to spend their money in the local shops, restaurants and hotels which in turn, sustains a strong retail sector.
Combined, the tourism and retail sectors employ around 13,800 people (almost 27% of the workforce), with Goowood Group - which owns the Goodward Park Hotel and Golf Course and of course the Goodward Estate itself - being the biggest employer within this sector, whilst Selsey’s caravan park is another significant employer that produces more than £50m a year for the local economy.
Chichester’s economy is growing, yet it continues to remain diverse.
For instance, the manufacturing sector employs 8% of the workforce, mainly in the yacht building business. With Chichester’s status as the second least affordable district in the South East of England, it is not surprising to learn that the area has never been one for heavy industry with the main manufacturing activity taking place being that which caters for the super-wealthy.
Northshore Yachts Yard and Rolls Royce are the biggest employers in this sector whilst Princes Foods is also a significant employer in the wider manufacturing sector.
And where there is money there are also banks that are more than willing to hold it for you. Although playing a smaller role in the local economy in this area compared to the national average, the finance and banking sector employs around 7,000 people in Chichester.
Key business districts
The Chichester Business Park, just 4 miles from the city centre, is one of the biggest centres in the area and home to a number of organisations, such as the administrative headquarters for Virgin Cosmetics, Epsicom Business Intelligence, Respironics, and the world headquarters of Carte Blanche Greetings.
