When you serve in today’s modern military, you learn self-discipline, earn respect, and demonstrate honour and a devotion to duty. You’ll get experiences you will never experience in civvy street – the loyalty you give and receive to your colleagues is a powerful feeling when on operational tours.
The British military arguably train the best professionals in the world, feared and respected, if you’re a billigerant state or country, having a battallion of Guards dropping into your territory is the beginning of the end for you. Make no mistake.
The experience, training, and leadership skills you will receive are exactly what today’s employers are looking for. Don’t listen to people that tell you that you won’t learn new skills because you definately will. And if you choose the right job, with the right tools for YOU then you will have the oppportunity to reach the peak of your abilities.
You don’t have to serve all your life – the minimum number of years service you can devote are 3 years. The choice is yours. Serve 5 or 6 years or work up to your half-pension and do 12, or go for the full 22 or even beyond. Whatever you decide will naturally have an impact on your life. Some people prefer to serve 3 or 4 years some serve 6 others want a full career, but the experience is different for everyone. You can measure your own standards by someone elses so make the choice for yourself. They’ll be oppportunities back in civvy street for someone who serves 3 or 12 years just the same.
You will also experience great satisfaction from knowing that you have proudly done your part in carrying on a tradition of selfless service that dates back for hundreds of years.
You will also find that your military experience will make you stand out above the rest. You and your family will notice a difference in how you handle adversity, hardship, trials, and confrontation. You will also find that people will come to count on you for your leadership skills and ability to make wise decisions.
There is also the opportunity to do something different with your life. Many military people comment that when they come home on leave they find their mates still doing exactly the same things as they have always done.
The Armed Forces is run on discipline, but there are opportunities for activities like adventurous training that will stretch your abilities and give you something to brag to other people about. These activities and the general training regime help you bond with your colleagues and make extremely strong friendships.
