How can I join an Armed Forces apprenticeship?

Army apprenticeships are part of a nationally recognised scheme that gives you the chance to work for an employer at the same time as studying for a relevant, work-based qualification. They’re a great way to learn useful skills and get practical experience, and they can also give you a real advantage in the job market.

The Army has the largest apprenticeship programme in the country, with about 75% of new soldiers taking part and over 5,500 completing their apprenticeship training each year.

Each apprenticeship fits in with your military training and is closely related to your Army role, so as well as becoming a better soldier, you are working towards a qualification that will be valued by civilian employers. And if you do your apprenticeship in the Army, you’ll be on full pay from the start.

What kind of Army apprenticeships are there?
There are two apprenticeship levels:

  • Apprenticeship Level 2 (equivalent to five good GCSE passes) - Military trade training forms the core of your apprenticeship. You complete a range of key skills qualifications (including literacy and numeracy), and gain a technical certificate. By the end of the apprenticeship, you will be a skilled Army tradesman, and will be rewarded with an NVQ Level 2.
  • Advanced Apprenticeship Level 3 (equivalent to two A-level passes) - These apprenticeships apply to the Army’s technical trades. As an Advanced Apprentice, you gain the relevant technical certificates through your trade training as well as an NVQ Level 3 and Key Skills. To qualify for an Advanced Apprenticeship, you need five GCSEs at grade C or above, or to have already completed a Level 2 Apprenticeship in the Army.

An Army apprenticeship is only the start. Every job in the Army offers the opportunity to progress to gain professional skills leading to higher qualifications, including full degrees.

What subjects can I do?
The aim of apprenticeships is to provide training that is closely linked to a job, so the apprenticeship you do will reflect whatever Army role you choose.
The Army offers apprenticeships in many careers, including: engineering, information and communications technologies, construction, driving and animal care. New programmes to fit with Army training are being developed all the time.

How do I get started?
You’ll generally start your apprenticeship while you’re doing your Army training. Don’t worry if your literacy and numeracy still need some work – the Army will help you reach the right standard. All you have to do is meet the entry requirements set by your chosen Regiment or Corps.
