That was one hell of a night; an unplanned and unexpected epic evening which started with a swift half and ended in a badly cooked kebab and half an hour trying to focus on getting your key in the door.
However, it all happened on a Tuesday and now your alarm is making it abundantly clear that it's time for you to get up and face a day at work.
Whether you're just going in for a regular day or if you've got important clients to impress, it's imperative that you do your best to disguise that fact that you feel like you're recovering from an autopsy. Here's how:
- Rehydrate - a heavy night can leave you with a severe lack of water in your system so drink a much as you can manage to replenish the lost fluids. You can get sachets of rehydration powder to mix into your drink - they taste foul, but do the trick. Coffee has the opposite effect on hydration so steer clear.
- Clean yourself up - shower, brush your teeth and go through all the other hygiene basics that go into your morning routine. Even if you're running late, don't be tempted to skip this part. Forgetting to shave or put on your make up is an obvious tell-tale sign that you're not feeling 100%.
- Take a tablet - some ibuprofen can work wonders so always keep a packet to hand. Stick to the recommended dose and make sure you choose the non-drowsy options. There are many hangover cures on the pharmacy shelves which you could try. Some people swear by them, some people don’t believe the hype, but they're not going to do you any harm.
- Exercise - if you can muster up the energy, get yourself down to the gym and sweat the booze out of your system. If you can’t face the running machine, try the steam room.
- Eat something - there are two types of people when it comes to hangovers; those who want the greasiest breakfast known to man, and those who feel ill at the very thought of food. Get something down you, ideally some fruit to top up your vitamin levels.
- Avoid contact - if you don't want to advertise the fact you're not on top form, do what you can to have a solitary day without interruptions. Cancel anything that can be cancelled and have a day cleaning up your email inbox or catching up on stat reports.
- Don't make excuses - if you're found out by your boss, don't try and lie your way out of it by saying you've got a cold coming on. Nobody likes a liar and when your drunken photos turn up on Facebook in the afternoon you'll have some explaining to do. Most bosses will understand and will have felt your pain at some point during their career.
- Don't go in - if you really think there's potential that you'd be sick all over your secretary if you do make the trek into work, call up and put on your best croaky illness voice. This is only an option if your colleagues or bosses were unaware that you were planning a night on the tiles.
Of course, the best advice on how to avoid a hangover is to not go out the night before. But where's the fun in that?
